Classroom

For parents across Canada: instruction, materials, and notices are where many families first want a clearer picture — and where new issues often show up first. Ask specifically, keep dates, and compare answers to published curriculum and board policy.

Anywhere in Canada: Use the national parent toolkit for copy-ready letter outlines and checklists (not legal advice — laws vary by province). Adapt to your board’s forms and timelines.
Example from a live board hub: Durham families can use PPM 162 notice timelines, letter templates, and board contacts on the Durham Parents Resource.

What you can ask

  • Unit outlines and learning goals for the current term
  • Core textbooks, digital platforms, and supplementary readings
  • Guest lessons, videos, or third-party programmes used in class
  • Dates for sensitive topics (including health / HPE units where applicable)
  • How and when parents are notified before certain lessons

Tips that work

  • Write to the teacher first; copy the principal if needed after a reasonable wait
  • Ask for documents or links, not just verbal summaries
  • One topic per email keeps replies focused and easy to file
  • Quote the policy or ministry document you are relying on
  • Save PDFs and screenshots with the date you received them

Notices & opt-outs

  • Confirm whether a topic requires advance notice under board or ministry rules
  • Ask how opt-out or alternative assignments are handled at your school
  • Request the form or process in writing before the lesson date
  • Follow up if the notice arrives with too little lead time

Quick checklist

  • I know this term’s major units for my child’s courses
  • I have asked (in writing) for materials I cannot see in the portal
  • I have noted any guest speakers or third-party content planned
  • I have checked PPM / board notice rules that apply to my board
  • Replies are saved with dates in one folder
